HCG

HCG (Human Chorionic gonadotropin)

What is HCG?

HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced in the human placenta by the syncytiotrophoblast that is used to induce ovulation in the ovaries and testosterone in the tests. HCG may also be used to treat infertility in women and to increase sperm count in men. It is considered as an efficient alternative in women who do not produce enough HCG and in women who cannot have babies. Most often, the presence of HCG is detected in pregnancy tests; even so, it is not a rule. HCG may be produced by some cancerous tumors. During pregnancy, HCG contributes to secretion of progesterone and to sustainable growth of the fetus. But the presence of HCG may not always be beneficial during pregnancy as HCG may contribute to the development of peritrophoblastic immune tolerance and facilitate the trophoblast invasion, which is considered to expedite fetal development in the endometrium. The symptoms of such reactions are morning sickness and other complications in pregnant women.

HCG may take various forms, such as pituitary HCG, Total HCG, C-terminal peptide total CHG, beta-core fragment HCG, nicked HCG and others.

General facts about HCG

As already mentioned, human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone produced by syncytiotrophoblast to induce ovulation in the ovaries and testosterone in the tests. Clinically, it is indicated in the form of an injection for a quick release of the drug. Either you are injecting it by yourself or are going every time to the hospital for administration of HCG, you have to be well informed about how this medicine works, its potential side effects, interaction with other steroids drugs, benefits from the therapy with it and others.

·As HCG is a hormone, when induced in the blood it may cause blood clots. The symptoms to such reaction may be the following: redness at the injection site, numbness, pain, confusion, severe headache and extreme dizziness.

·Some women may experience ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome while on therapy with HCG. Such adverse effect may occur after the first treatment cycle and in some cases it may become a life-threatening condition. The most important symptom to such reaction is severe pelvic pain, the secondary ones are: stomach pain, swelling of the hands or legs, diarrhea, urinating less than normal and others. Such reactions are rare but still possible. Therefore, if any of the enumerated symptoms are detected, consult a physician right away and get prompt treatment.

·As HCG may also be used to treat infertility in women, it may stimulate pregnancy with twins, triplets. Most of the time, pregnancy with twins and triplets are more difficult to carry, as the patient has to stay under supervision of physicians for the whole period of pregnancy to ensure normal development of babies. Therefore, make periodical examinations and take into account such possibility.

·Even if clinically HCG has the described indication, in some cases it may be used for weight loss. There are advantages and disadvantages of such method for losing weight, that is why get well informed about them before using it.

Contraindications

HCG is contraindicated in women with thyroid or adrenal gland disorder, premature puberty, ovarian cyst, heart and kidney diseases, epilepsy, asthma and others. It is also contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to it. Avoid HCG if you have any medical condition that is not compatible with its use. Consult a physician for more information.

Indications of use

As already mentioned, HCG is indicated in the form of injection, in order to ensure a quick release of the drug in the blood. It has to be administered as prescribed, do not exceed the dose and do not take it more often than indicated. During pregnancy, the body naturally produces HCG, therefore if you become pregnant while on therapy with it discontinue administering it and consult a physician for more indications. The dose of HCG is set individually, considering the physical condition of the patient and others. Also, the length of therapy with it is indicated individually until the desired results are obtained. Follow the indications of use properly and visit your physician for regular examinations. Try to not miss doses in order to benefit most from the therapy with it. However, if you did missed a dose, do not worry; take it as soon as possible.

Tips for using HCG

As HCG is given as an injection, it has to be administered into the muscle or under the skin. It is recommended to visit a doctor or nurse each time you need to inject the hormone; however, if you are injecting it by yourself take into consideration the following:

·Use each time a disposable needle;

·Inspect the vial for any invisible particles or crystals. If there are any, warm up the vial for a couple minutes in your hand to have them dissolved;

·In order to avoid irritation or swelling at the injection site change it once in a while.

Possible side effects

A part of the possible side effects is covered in the section: General facts about HCG. As other gonadotropin hormones, human chorionic gonadotropin may also cause side effects. The most common side effects reported by women after the first cycle of therapy with HCG are the following:

·Dizziness;

·Headache;

·Confusion;

·Nausea or vomiting;

·Unusual tiredness and migraines.

Such side effects are short in action and tolerable. Usually, these disappear once the body gets used to the drug.

The symptoms of more severe side effects associated with HCG are the following:

·Severe pelvic and stomach pain;

·Swelling of the hands or legs;

·Weight gain;

·Diarrhea;

·Urinating less than normal and others.

Such adverse reactions are rare, but still possible. In order to avoid the incidence of experiencing such reactions follow properly the indications of use and dosage and visit the doctor on a regular basis.

How to store HCG

It is recommended to store ampules of HCG in a clean and dry place, preferably in the refrigerator. Keep the ampules out of the reach of children and pets. Safely discard the drug if no longer needed or expired.
